The European Central Bank (ECB) has moved its digital euro project into a new phase, with a preparatory stage starting in October 2025 and a possible launch by 2029. Legislative approval by 2026 is needed to maintain the timeline, while pilot programs with private payment providers are planned for 2027. The digital euro aims to support existing payment systems and strengthen European strategic autonomy in digital finance, including compliance with digital asset regulation and Countering the Financing of Terrorism measures.
