Discord will roll out age verification measures to all users starting Wednesday. This initiative, previously delayed due to user backlash, has been relaunched amid tightening regulations in multiple regions, with the platform aiming to reduce resistance by collecting fewer documents.
Over 90% of users do not need to submit identification documents.
In a blog post published on Tuesday, Discord Chief Technology Officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy stated that over 90% of users will not be required to verify their age directly. The platform will prioritize identifying age signals based on existing account data, categorizing users into three groups: adults, teens, or unconfirmed.
The company stated that the criteria for assessment include account age, device information, activity data, and usage patterns. Discord also emphasized that age estimation will not be based on message content, profile information, or demographic attributes.
The model determines age groups based on usage behavior.
Discord stated in another technical blog that machine learning models have learned overall usage differences among users of different age groups, such as the number of communities they join and how they interact with others, and use this information to determine whether an account is more likely to belong to an adult or a teenager.
The company stated that, since regions such as Brazil and Texas had previously required the platform to implement age verification technology, Discord was able to leverage the confirmed age data from these regions to train its model, correlating user behavior with age groups.
If the system cannot confidently verify that the user is an adult, the user may still initiate an appeal without necessarily submitting biometric data or identity documents. Optional methods include linking a credit card or providing age group information from an Apple App Store or Google Play account.
Teen accounts will have new access restrictions added.
For confirmed adult users, platform features will remain largely unchanged. Accounts identified as minors will automatically lose access to age-restricted servers or channels.
At the same time, private message requests from non-friends will be placed in a separate message requests inbox; the system will also send a reminder when a teenager is about to accept a friend request from a user with no mutual friends.
Discord previously delayed these plans in February this year due to user concerns that biometric scanning and ID verification could pose privacy risks. These concerns are not unfounded. Last year, a third-party vendor partnered with Discord experienced a data breach that potentially exposed the information of approximately 70,000 users, including government-issued ID photos and selfies used for identity verification.
As governments around the world continue to advance rules protecting minors online, pressure on tech platforms is increasing. Age verification is seen as one compliance measure, but it also introduces new privacy and security concerns, requiring platforms to balance regulatory requirements with user concerns.
