Dell shares plunged 11% on Wednesday, leading a data center equipment sell-off on mounting concerns that enterprise AI spending will not justify the AI buildout. Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), Oracle and Super Micro also declined. Barclays analysts downgraded Dell, HPE and NetApp to the equivalent of hold from buy in a Wednesday report to clients. The analysts cited enterprise AI timing after significant stock gains.
Barclays analysts said enterprise spending at Dell, HPE and NetApp had not shown a meaningful acceleration related to AI. The analysts instead attributed increased revenue to the global memory shortage. The analysts noted that infrastructure companies had passed higher memory prices on to customers. Barclays analysts said businesses typically allocate just 5% of IT budgets to AI, despite growing expectations that enterprise AI adoption will drive hardware replacement. The analysts found that only about a quarter of total enterprise AI spending goes toward hardware. The analysts said normalizing and eventually declining memory prices could weigh on infrastructure-related revenue.
Data center server and other backend equipment makers have attracted investor interest this year on expectations of large equipment sales linked to AI demand for years ahead. Dell shares have risen more than 300% this year, making Dell one of the market's top performers. HPE shares have risen about 160% this year. NetApp shares have doubled this year.
However, sentiment toward AI infrastructure has shifted recently, partly because of concerning revenue figures from OpenAI. Investors also fear that rising interest rates will create difficulties because much of the AI buildout relies on debt. Oracle, a heavy borrower, fell 9% on Wednesday and is now down 33% for the year. Neocloud company CoreWeave plunged 15% on Wednesday, erasing CoreWeave's gains for 2026.
Memory is a highly cyclical business. Memory stocks fell this week after China's ChangXin Memory Technologies, also known as CXMT, reported progress over the weekend on a new chip structure. Micron shares are down 11% for the week. South Korea's SK Hynix has fallen 13% in U.S. trading this week. Western Digital has dropped more than 8% this week.
Dell Stock Plunges 11% Amid Enterprise AI Spending Concerns
FLASH AIShare
Dell shares dropped 11% on October 15, 2026, as worries over enterprise AI spending weighed on the stock. Barclays cut Dell, HPE, and NetApp to hold, citing weak AI spending growth and one-time memory shortage benefits. Analysts noted AI takes just 5% of IT budgets, with hardware absorbing about a quarter of that. Oracle fell 9%, CoreWeave 15%. Traders are now watching key support and resistance levels, with the risk-to-reward ratio looking less favorable for near-term buyers.
