The entire dataset is about 1 PB—more than 30 times larger than the AlphaFold Database. The human genome contains roughly 3 billion DNA letters, and each position can be replaced by any of three other letters, resulting in approximately 9 billion possible single-letter variations. Previously, researchers had to use AlphaGenome to analyze each variant individually; now, they can directly query results in Atlas without re-running the model each time. Atlas also assigns an AVI score to each variant, combining predictions from AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense to help researchers prioritize the most likely impactful variants. It covers not only the approximately 2% of protein-coding regions but also the more challenging 98% of non-coding regions. Research teams have already used Atlas to identify previously overlooked variants linked to rare diseases and confirmed through experiments that one such variant indeed causes abnormal RNA splicing.
