CZ Comments on BTC Loss Data: Exchange Custody May Be Safer Than Self-Custody

According to ME News, on August 4 (UTC+8), CZ reposted a post by Willy Woo regarding Bitcoin loss data, stating that if the data is accurate, exchange-held assets may be statistically safer than self-custodied assets. Hacks targeting exchanges are more easily quantifiable, whereas incidents involving lost or stolen self-custodied wallets are often not publicly disclosed, making such data harder to collect. On the other hand, exchange data is also influenced by the failures of some defunct exchanges. Finally, CZ emphasized that neither custody method is absolutely superior—different approaches suit different users, and a balanced approach to asset custody may be the better option. Previously, Willy Woo’s statistical data showed that approximately 1.57 million Bitcoin have been permanently lost due to self-custody.
