The cryptocurrency industry's leading super PAC network, Fairshake, is spending $55 million against Sherrod Brown's attempt to return to the Senate from Ohio. Brown is gaining a polling lead, and doubts are increasing about whether the spending will help Republicans retain Senate control. President Donald Trump will visit Ohio today to support that effort.
Fairshake spent $40 million in 2024 opposing Brown, who was then Senate Banking Committee chair. Brown lost, and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, an opponent of cryptocurrency, succeeded Brown as the committee's leading Democrat. Senate rules now prevent Brown from regaining Banking Committee seniority if Brown wins. One financial services lobbyist argued that Fairshake's $40 million expenditure in 2024 had no effect and criticized the network for repeating the strategy.
The Ohio Senate contest ranks second in spending among this cycle's races. Spending on the race exceeded $500 million this week. Some prominent Fairshake critics questioned whether the network's backers receive an accurate assessment of competitive races.
A cryptocurrency executive aligned with the Democratic Party said many technology-sector backers of Fairshake do not believe Democrats can regain Senate control. The executive said those backers no longer hear opposing assessments. The executive cited Fairshake's absence from the Maine Senate race as evidence that the network's spending priorities do not match the network's legislative objectives. Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine opposed the latest cryptocurrency bill, but Fairshake has not spent money attacking Collins.
A person close to Fairshake rejected suggestions of a complex underlying strategy, saying the network is demonstrating support for political champions in both parties through favorable and difficult periods. A Brown defeat would further isolate Democrats who already warn that Fairshake's Ohio campaign makes future progress on cryptocurrency legislation harder to envision.
A Brown victory could prompt the Democratic caucus to make an exception and restore Brown's seniority. Brown has not said whether Brown wants to rejoin the Banking Committee, which could offer fewer political advantages than other committees. The Senate Agriculture Committee is another possibility and could allow Brown to pass a farm bill before Brown faces voters again in two years. A spokesperson for Brown did not respond to a request for comment.
