TL;DR

  • Crypto activity recovered in July, with DeFi lending, DEX volumes, and perpetual futures showing renewed market participation.
  • DeFi loans increased 7.2% to $22.2B, while total value locked across decentralized finance surpassed $74.9B during the month.
  • Liquidity remained limited, as stablecoin supply declined 0.6% and institutional inflows continued showing cautious behavior.

Cryptoactivity recovered in July as traders returned to decentralized finance, derivatives markets, and on-chain transactions, but the sector continued operating with limited fresh liquidity entering the market. DeFi lending, decentralized exchanges, and perpetual futures recorded stronger participation, showing renewed demand across several areas of the cryptoecosystem.

Despite the improvement in activity, capital inflows remained restrained. Stablecoinsupply declined during the month, while ETF demand and treasury accumulation slowed compared with previous periods. The market showed signs of internal strength rather than a broad expansion driven by new external capital.

Crypto Activity Recovers As DeFi And Trading Volumes Expand

July marked a shift for DeFi lending after five consecutive months of decline. Active loans increased from $20.7B to $22.2B, representing a 7.2% monthly growth, according to Cryptorank data. Total value locked across DeFi protocols also increased from $68B at the beginning of the month to more than $74.9B by July 31.

Aave remained the leading lending platform, accounting for $11B in active loans and a 46.2% market share. Together with Morpho, both protocols controlled around two-thirds of the active lending market.

Ethereum’s performance also supported the recovery. ETH gained 20.32% during July, outperforming Bitcoin’s 9.03% monthly increase. While BTC continued attracting significant attention, stronger ETH performance helped improve activity across decentralized applications and related markets.

DEX trading volumes surpassed $169B in July, increasing by more than 10% during the final week of the month. Perpetual futures activity also accelerated, with volumes rising over 12% in the last week. Open interest continued expanding throughout 2026, reaching more than $15B, according to DeFi Llama data.

Liquidity Conditions Remain Limited Despite Stronger Crypto Market Activity

The recovery in crypto activity has not been accompanied by a significant increase in available liquidity. Stablecoin supply contracted by 0.6% in July, falling to approximately $312B, suggesting investors remain selective with new capital allocation.

ETF inflows also remained weak, indicating limited participation from traditional investors. Corporate treasury accumulation, which previously supported Bitcoin demand, slowed considerably, while companies focused on SOL and ETH holdings also reduced their expansion strategies.
