A climate tech company headquartered in Wyoming has secured its first purchase of CDR credits to be delivered in 2026.
Gillette, Wyoming, September 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Climate tech company Cowboy Clean Fuels, which provides permanent carbon dioxide removal and carbon-neutral renewable natural gas (RNG), today announced the completion of its first carbon removal credit sale. The purchase, facilitated through Milkywire and supported by Salesforce, is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
This sale marks Cowboy Clean Fuels' entry into the durable carbon removal market, adding CDR credit sales to its existing carbon-neutral RNG business.
Biomass carbon removal and storage pathway based on underground resources in Wyoming
Cowboy Clean Fuels operates a biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) pathway in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Agricultural processing residues are injected into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where native microorganisms anaerobically degrade the biomass, producing renewable natural gas while permanently adsorbing carbon dioxide onto coal surfaces. The amount of carbon removed is quantified using the company’s patented BiCRS+RNG methodology, developed in accordance with ISO 14064-2:2019, with permanence exceeding 100 years.
The Cowboy Clean Fuels project is certified under the Absolute Carbon Standard developed by Absolute Climate, with credits issued through the C-Capsule registration system operated by Evident, a part of Xpansiv. Climate Vault Solutions has conducted an independent assessment of the company’s Triangle Unit project following a multi-stage technical review.
The extensive coalbed methane infrastructure and non-minable coal reserves in the Powder River Basin provide this technology pathway with a unique combination: durable geological storage, renewable natural gas production, and a resource base measured in decades rather than single project cycles. Cowboy Clean Fuels states that the company currently operates the only patented BiCRS + RNG pathway available for purchase on the market.
Durable carbon removal requires pathways that can be verified today and scaled tomorrow, and Wyoming’s subsurface resources enable us to achieve both. Buyers partnering with us can simultaneously obtain permanent carbon removal and carbon-neutral renewable natural gas from the same operations—a combination that few suppliers can offer. This represents a significant step forward for Cowboy Clean Fuels and the rural communities in Campbell County, Wyoming, that made this work possible.
Ryan Waddington, CEO of Cowboy Clean Fuels
These purchases are part of Salesforce’s commitment to sign $100 million in durable carbon removal by 2030.
Wyoming and Campbell County
Cowboy Clean Fuels states that its operations are built on the existing coalbed methane infrastructure and the operational expertise of Wyoming’s energy workforce, effectively leveraging existing assets. The project creates skilled technical jobs in Campbell County and generates new revenue from existing infrastructure.
Durable carbon removal and renewable natural gas also create new markets for the region’s existing resources and workforce, supporting economic diversification in Campbell County and throughout Wyoming. Cowboy Clean Fuels believes that collaboration with county and state governments is foundational to its long-term success.
Supply status
Cowboy Clean Fuels is developing additional projects in the Powder River Basin, currently securing contracts for durable carbon removal scale and carbon-neutral RNG supply. Certified credits are listed on registry systems and available for immediate purchase. The company aims to leverage Wyoming’s infrastructure, subsurface resources, and energy workforce to become the leading U.S. supplier of verifiable, durable CDR through permanent geological carbon storage over the coming decades.
