As per Forklog, consumer advocacy groups have raised concerns over AI-powered children's toys, citing potential threats to minors. The Public Interest Research Group (Pirg) reported that a plush AI toy, Kumma by FoloToy, began discussing sexualized topics when prompted. Pirg's director Teresa Murray stated that it was easy to provoke the toy into discussing inappropriate content. The smart toys market is valued at $16.7 billion, with significant growth in China. Pirg advocates for stricter regulation for toys targeting children under 13, but not a complete ban. OpenAI temporarily halted FoloToy sales after the report, but later resumed with a ByteDance chatbot. On November 27, 80 organizations, including Fairplay, urged families to avoid AI toys during the holiday season.
