Coinbase is testing an AI agent modeled after co-founder Fred Ehrsam and former CTO Balaji Srinivasan to integrate into workplace communications for providing employee feedback. CEO Brian Armstrong announced on Saturday.
Fred's agent functions as a strategic execution assistant, helping employees "refine documents, strategies, and concepts," while Balaji's agent is designed to "inspire innovation and new perspectives."
Ehrsam and Srinivasan both played important roles in Coinbase’s early development, and Armstrong referred to them as “legendary former employees of Coinbase” in Monday’s announcement.
Coinbase engineer Travis Bloom, according to reports, said during discussions with Balaji’s agent that this “really helps clarify the vision.”
Armstrong additionally as the "next step," the exchange will "enable any employee to easily create additional proxy employees," and future proxies may not be digital twins of real individuals.
Coinbase and Agent AI
These autonomous AI agents complement Coinbase’s broader AI infrastructure, which includes machine learning tools designed to predict user traffic and automatically scale its resources.
In February, the exchange launched a smart wallet enabling an AI system to independently hold funds, execute trades, and process on-chain transactions.
These wallets align with Coinbase's wallet x402, which is developing an autonomous cryptocurrency payment protocol that requires no human intervention. The exchange has positioned itself as a leader in the integration of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency.Blockchain infrastructure. This move builds on the infrastructure established in September last year.x402 Marketplace, a stablecoin-based payment ecosystem designed for AI agents.
Armstrong noted, "I suspect that in the near future, the number of our agents will exceed the number of human employees."
