Coinbase reports its worst financial results yet, but the market may be missing the point—Grenade

Coinbase returned to profitability in the third quarter, but revenue continued to contract. In the third quarter of 2026, the company's total revenue was $1.216 billion, a 35% year-over-year decline and roughly flat quarter-over-quarter; net profit reached $719 million, ending three consecutive quarters of losses, but this included $715 million in cryptocurrency asset investment gains. Excluding investment gains and losses and related taxes, adjusted net profit was $77.7 million, down 82% year-over-year.

The financial report shows two distinct growth trajectories: traditional crypto trading continues to be held back by low trading volumes, while USDC, prediction markets, and subscription services are beginning to provide stronger support. Coinbase is reducing its reliance on spot trading, but its new businesses are currently helping to stabilize revenue, still falling short of reigniting overall growth.

Profitability turned positive, but operational recovery lagged behind financial statements.

In the third quarter, Coinbase's adjusted EBITDA was $333 million, a 60% sequential increase and the 15th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA; however, it still declined 58% year-over-year. Adjusted net income also turned positive at $77.7 million, compared to a loss of $105 million in the second quarter, indicating genuine operational improvement.

The improvement primarily stemmed from cost control. Total operating expenses for the third quarter amounted to $1.154 billion, a 17% year-over-year decline and a 13% sequential decline; adjusted expenses were $975 million, down 6% sequentially and below the previously guided range of $980 million to $1.08 billion. With little sequential revenue growth, the reduction in costs provided significant support for the return to profitability.

However, the $719 million GAAP net profit was significantly driven by asset price movements. In addition to $715 million in gains from cryptocurrency asset investments, the quarter also included approximately $39.2 million in other investment gains. While portfolio appreciation strengthens the balance sheet, it also causes reported profits to remain volatile with cryptocurrency market fluctuations. Valuation judgments should rely more on transaction revenue, net stablecoin income, and sustainable fee levels.

The company still maintains a strong cash buffer, with cash and cash equivalents of $8.604 billion at the end of the quarter and approximately $2 billion remaining under its share repurchase authorization. However, operating cash flow for the first nine months amounted to $786 million, down from $1.803 billion in the same period last year; during the same period, share-based compensation expenses reached $719 million. While cash flow remains positive, the recovery in profitability has not yet translated into equivalent cash generation capacity.

Trading volume continues to rise, but industry contraction still outweighs competitive advantages.

Third-quarter trading revenue was $590 million, a year-over-year decrease of approximately 44% and a quarter-over-quarter decrease of 1%. Consumer trading revenue amounted to approximately $450 million, flat quarter-over-quarter; institutional trading revenue was approximately $92 million, down 8% quarter-over-quarter.

During the same period, Coinbase's spot crypto trading volume decreased from $146.4 billion in the second quarter to $134.5 billion, a roughly 9% decline in consumer spot trading volume; crypto derivatives trading volume also declined by approximately 6% quarter-over-quarter. Despite the contraction in core trading volumes, revenue remained relatively stable, highlighting the buffering effect of new products.

The company’s market share of cryptocurrency trading volume rose to 10.7%, up from 10.3% in the previous quarter and 5.6% in the same period last year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of growth. This metric encompasses spot trading, crypto derivatives, and stablecoin-related activities, reflecting the company’s competitive position in overall trading volume. Fee rates vary significantly across products, and the contribution of market share growth to revenue depends on the trading mix.

Coinbase is gaining market share in a market with weak trading activity, while industry contraction continues to suppress revenue growth.

The asset custody business has also experienced similar differentiation. Platform assets reached $377 billion at the end of the quarter, a significant rebound from $246 billion in the second quarter, with the share of total crypto market capitalization returning to 12.5%. The return of assets and rising prices have supported custody, staking, and financing services; however, the increase in long-term holdings has had relatively limited impact on high-frequency trading fee revenue.

Management stated on the earnings call that this quarter saw significant inflows into Bitcoin ETFs, accompanied by increased institutional participation and a decline in Bitcoin volatility. For Coinbase, institutionalization can expand the asset base but may also make revenue more dependent on low-fee trading, custody, and financing services.

USDC drives revenue, but growth requires associated costs.

Subscription and service revenue reached $570 million in the third quarter, up 3% quarter-over-quarter and accounting for 49% of net revenue; however, it remained down 20% year-over-year. This segment accounts for nearly half of revenue and helps mitigate the impact of trading cycles, but stablecoin, staking, and financing businesses continue to be affected by interest rates and cryptocurrency prices.

Stablecoins were the most important driver this quarter. Stablecoin revenue reached $3.07 billion, a 5% sequential increase, accounting for more than half of subscription and services revenue. The average USDC balance within Coinbase products rose to $22 billion, a 49% year-over-year increase, marking the 14th consecutive quarter of record highs.

Meanwhile, the average total market capitalization of USDC decreased from $77 billion in the previous quarter to $73 billion. Despite this trend, Coinbase’s in-product balances increased, demonstrating that its distribution, product integrations, and on-chain partnerships are attracting more USDC deposits; in particular, USDC balances related to Hyperliquid, introduced in June, contributed a full quarter’s worth of value in the third quarter.

This also explains the dual impact of interest rates on Coinbase. Higher rates can boost earnings from stablecoin reserves but may suppress risk appetite and trading activity; if interest rates decline in the future, trading demand could receive support, while yields on stablecoin unit balances may face pressure. Business diversification has improved the revenue structure and increased offsetting effects among different macroeconomic variables.

The growth in stablecoins is accompanied by incentive expenditures. The company expects increased USDC rewards and marketing spend in the fourth quarter. Therefore, when evaluating this business, it is essential to monitor balance growth, revenue growth, and reward costs together to assess the profit contribution from new funds deposited.

During the conference call, management also acknowledged that Coinbase and Circle compete in the stablecoin payment infrastructure space, while both continue to benefit from the growing scale of USDC. The partnership delivers economic benefits, but payment access and customer relationships require ongoing investment to secure.

Prediction markets have begun generating revenue, with further profit potential yet to be unlocked.

Prediction markets were the clearest new growth driver this quarter. In the third quarter, the annualized revenue scale of this business exceeded $200 million, with daily average trading users increasing by over 60% quarter-over-quarter. The $200 million figure represents the annualized revenue based on the quarterly income, corresponding to a single-quarter revenue exceeding $50 million.

This volume is insufficient to offset the year-over-year shortfall in traditional trading business, but it is already sufficient to impact quarterly revenue performance. Consumer spot trading volume in the third quarter declined by approximately 9%, while consumer trading revenue remained largely flat, with forecasted market growth acting as a buffer.

Business expansion is also moving away from reliance on a single sports event cycle. The company disclosed that non-sports categories have shown strong growth, with recurring contracts centered around themes like crypto volatility helping to maintain trading activity between major events. Alignment with the needs of existing crypto users provides a foundation for cross-selling products.

However, revenue growth from the prediction market is accompanied by external exchange fees. Management stated in the earnings presentation that the company has received CFTC approval to launch its own prediction market contracts and plans to improve economics by building its own clearing and infrastructure. As the business scales, the amount of revenue retained will determine its actual contribution to profitability.

The business logic of "Everything Exchange" has thus become clearer: enabling users to switch between spot, derivatives, prediction markets, and other assets to increase the frequency of use within the same account. Coinbase One paid subscribers grew 24% year-over-year, supporting user retention. However, a broader range of products and membership benefits requires higher customer revenue and longer retention periods to offset customer acquisition and incentive costs.

Revenue saw a modest recovery in the fourth quarter, with expenses rising first.

The Q4 guidance introduces new constraints on short-term profitability.

The company expects subscription and service revenue to range from $550 million to $630 million, with a midpoint of $590 million, representing approximately a 3.5% increase from the third quarter, but below the market expectation of approximately $611 million according to FactSet. This indicates that stablecoin, staking, and financing businesses are expected to continue improving, though the pace of growth has not yet met market expectations.

As of October 25, the cumulative trading revenue for the fourth quarter was approximately $165 million. The company has not provided guidance for the full-quarter trading revenue, and future performance will continue to depend on trading volume, volatility, and product mix.

The rebound on the expense side is even more pronounced. According to the earnings presentation materials, adjusted expenses for the fourth quarter are expected to range from $1.007 billion to $1.157 billion, with a midpoint of $1.082 billion, representing an approximate 11% increase from the third quarter. In comparison, the midpoint of the subscription and services revenue guidance increased by only about $20 million.

Management explained that the increase in expenses was primarily due to marketing investments in products such as USDC rewards and prediction markets, as well as the deferral of certain third-quarter professional service costs to the fourth quarter. Thus, the decline in third-quarter costs reflects both ongoing improvements in personnel expenses and timing-related effects from periodic expenditures.

The full-year adjusted expense guidance has been further lowered to $4.15 billion to $4.3 billion, demonstrating the company’s continued discipline on costs. However, for the fourth quarter, if trading revenue does not accelerate significantly, rising expenses may constrain further profit expansion.

Valuation reassessment still requires revenue and cash flow realization.

Coinbase’s long-term value is expanding beyond trading fees to include stablecoin distribution, asset custody, derivatives, financing, and on-chain infrastructure. The third quarter demonstrated that these investments have already helped offset declines in its traditional business.

AI finance offers greater long-term growth potential. Management mentioned on the earnings call that agent-based trading volume has grown rapidly, but it remains small relative to the overall trading business. Its value depends on whether sustainable trading, payment, and financing demand can be established in the future; currently, its contribution to profitability remains limited.

From a valuation perspective, quarterly investment gains can exaggerate the magnitude of profit improvement, while adjusted EBITDA excludes substantial equity-based compensation. The market needs to see more sustainable operating results: increased trading share translating into revenue growth, USDC expansion offsetting incentive costs, prediction markets enhancing profit retention, and improved cash flow supporting buybacks and reinvestment.

Coinbase has demonstrated greater business resilience than in the past, but the third quarter was characterized by stabilized revenue and cost-driven profit recovery. The key next step is whether new businesses can drive profit growth amid rising fees, transforming diversification from a cyclical buffer into a source of growth.
