Coinbase published technical priorities for Bitcoin's post-quantum transition, urging the community to begin preparations for a complex, multi-year process. The exchange holds 5% of the total bitcoin supply and said Coinbase is preparing its own systems for a post-quantum future. Coinbase said protecting the Bitcoin network from quantum threats involves more than selecting a quantum-resistant signature scheme. Coinbase urged preparations well ahead of any announcement of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer because Bitcoin consensus changes and ecosystem migrations can take years.
Coinbase said an ideal approach would protect both exposed and newly created funds while fitting within Bitcoin's limited block space. Coinbase said the approach should preserve independent validation by full nodes, work with institutional custody systems and support ordinary wallets. Coinbase said the approach should also provide a credible path for coins that cannot or will not move.
Coinbase said post-quantum output designs should separate the container from the signature scheme, allowing schemes to be introduced, replaced or supplemented without a complete redesign. Coinbase identified P2MR (BIP-360) and P2TRv2 as constructions that appear to offer this flexibility. Coinbase favors staged protection that would let active wallets use a post-quantum-capable or hybrid construction before a final policy on legacy signatures is settled. Coinbase described a 1-of-2 construction giving the same funds two alternative spending paths, one authorized by a classical ECDSA or Schnorr key and another by a post-quantum key.
Coinbase said any support for stateful signatures should also include a stateless option because state mismanagement in stateful designs could lead to forgery. Coinbase said compatibility with multiparty computation (MPC) is important for institutional custody. Coinbase said at least one viable post-quantum option should have promising MPC compatibility. Coinbase said effectively implemented MPC can strongly protect against key theft and is an important defense for large organizations facing constant infrastructure attacks.
Coinbase said questions about abandoned or inaccessible coins are difficult and deserve debate. Coinbase said that debate can proceed in parallel with technical work to add post-quantum signature support. Coinbase said Bitcoin will continue to be the most trusted cryptocurrency in a post-quantum world. Coinbase said the exchange wants to contribute to community efforts and help create conditions for careful, sustained progress.
