Coinbase Launches AI Programming Platform Forge to Explore Multi-Agent Software Development

Odaily Planet Daily report: Cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase is exploring the next generation of software development through its internal AI programming system, Forge. The platform has evolved from an early internal tool into an ecosystem encompassing multiple AI development capabilities and has become one of the enterprise applications of Agentic AI.

It is understood that Forge was previously known as Cloudbot, and its earliest versions were even called Claudebot. Today, Forge has become an essential component of the OpenSWE ecosystem, an open-source AI coding framework. OpenSWE aims to provide infrastructure similar to an “AI software engineer,” featuring capabilities such as agent orchestration, cloud sandboxes, tool invocation, Slack/Linear/GitHub integration, sub-agents, and automated creation of code pull requests.

One of Forge’s most prominent features is “Mux.” Currently used by around 600 engineers at Coinbase, this tool enables developers to run multiple AI agents simultaneously, transforming traditional sequential development workflows into parallel collaborative processes. In addition, Forge includes Slack task routing and automated “bug-to-fix” workflows to reduce manual handling of repetitive development tasks.

Coinbase’s engineering lead, Chintan Turakhia, previously conducted an internal experiment requiring nearly a thousand engineers to pause using traditional IDE tools for two weeks to explore which tasks could be automated through AI-driven development workflows. As adoption of AI coding tools has increased, Coinbase’s spending on AI has decreased while token usage has continued to rise. He noted that the company has developed its own AI development tools, providing employees with alternatives to third-party AI coding services such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

However, independent feedback on Forge and Mux from external sources remains limited, with most public information coming from Coinbase management disclosures; the actual user experience of regular engineers has not been fully disclosed.

Industry experts view Coinbase's Forge as representing a new direction in enterprise AI applications: rather than merely invoking general-purpose large models, companies are building AI agent systems tailored to their own business processes to improve development efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance internal productivity.
