Odaily Planet Daily reports: Coinbase has announced it has become the first and currently the only futures commission merchant (FCM) regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), enabling U.S. customers to access global crypto derivatives markets, including crypto perpetual swaps and options. Previously, U.S. institutions could only trade crypto products derived from domestic futures, lacking access to global markets.
Previously, U.S. clients could not access these global markets through compliant channels and were forced to establish offshore entities to access liquidity, increasing counterparty risk and duplicating infrastructure costs. Coinbase Financial Markets will provide U.S. institutional clients with compliant access to global crypto options and perpetual contracts through a single CFTC-regulated FCM, including connectivity to platforms like Deribit, which has open interest in Bitcoin options exceeding $31 billion and accounts for the vast majority of the global options market.
Institutional clients can begin onboarding immediately; Deribit options are now live on Coinbase Financial Markets, with perpetual contracts and additional collateral types coming soon. Wider access for retail customers is also planned.
This initiative means that U.S. clients can now access the world’s largest and most liquid crypto derivatives market through a single regulated channel, providing institutional investors with a more comprehensive and compliant trading environment while reducing cross-border operations and complexity.
