Coinbase has appointed former xAI finance chief Anthony Armstrong to its board of directors and Audit and Compliance Committee. The nomination increases Coinbase’s board from nine members to 10 while strengthening its financial and compliance leadership.

According to a regulatory filing, Armstrong joined the board on September 1 under Coinbase’s existing director compensation arrangements. Armstrong brings experience across investment banking, government operations, artificial intelligence, and social media businesses.

He spent nearly a decade at Morgan Stanley and eventually became vice chairman of its investment banking division. Consequently, his background gives Coinbase additional expertise in capital markets, corporate strategy, financial management, and major transactions.

Armstrong later worked as a senior advisor within the Department of Government Efficiency, commonly known as DOGE. Most recently, he served as chief financial officer across xAI, X.AI Corp., and X Corp. Moreover, the filing confirmed no family relationship between Armstrong and chief executive Brian Armstrong or other company leaders.

Armstrong Joins Coinbase During Wider Business Expansion

Armstrong enters Coinbase’s leadership structure as the exchange works to become a broader platform for financial products. The company calls this plan its everything exchange strategy, extending its business beyond cryptocurrency trading.

As part of that strategy, Coinbase introduced nearly 4,000 United States stocks for eligible British users. Significantly, the service gives Coinbase another route for attracting investors interested in traditional and digital assets.

It could also reduce the exchange’s dependence on transaction fees generated through cryptocurrency spot trading. Coinbase reported that 88% of its net revenue came from activities outside Bitcoin spot trading during its latest quarter.

However, the company’s expansion has not protected its publicly traded shares from substantial market pressure. Coinbase stock has declined more than 40% over the past year and closed Wednesday’s session at $174.96.

Nevertheless, management has maintained its effort to diversify revenue and strengthen Coinbase’s position across wider financial markets. Armstrong’s banking experience could support decisions involving capital allocation, risk management, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. Ultimately, Armstrong joins the board as Coinbase balances business expansion, regulatory obligations, cost management, and shareholder expectations.
