Canton Strategic Holdings' CNTN completed the first tokenized US stock trade under the SEC Innovation Exemption, moving through an issuer-sponsored structure that skips the 30-day objection window.
Canton Strategic Holdings (NASDAQ: CNTN) ran the first trade of a tokenized US stock under the SEC’s Innovation Exemption on 4 November 2026, as Crypto Briefing first reported. Five North sold about 14,461 CNTN shares to DRW Cumberland for roughly $30,296, at about $2.08 per share, on a permissioned Tokenized Securities Venue run by TSV LLC within the Canton Network.
The notable part for anyone watching tokenized equities is not the size of the trade. It is the structure behind it. Canton Strategic tokenized its own shares, an issuer-sponsored route that skips the 30-day notice-and-objection process a third party would face before wrapping someone else’s stock. The company announced the plan on 29 October, and a week later the shares were trading on-chain.
Why the issuer-sponsored route matters
Under the exemption, which the SEC introduced on 17 September 2026, qualifying Tokenized Securities Venues get temporary relief from registering as exchanges when they trade tokenized NMS stocks. The relief runs five years, to 17 September 2031, and carries volume caps and access controls. Issuer-sponsored tokenization fits neatly into that window: a company that wants its stock on-chain can move without waiting out the objection period, and CNTN is the template now on the table for other Nasdaq-listed firms.
The tokenized shares carry the same economic and voting rights as CNTN shares held through Nasdaq, with settlement handled by Fairmint TA LLC, an SEC-registered on-chain transfer agent that keeps the official ownership register. For US crypto readers, that combination, full shareholder rights plus around-the-clock atomic settlement, is what earlier tokenized-stock experiments have lacked.
It follows a run of movement in this corner of the market, from exchanges preparing tokenized stock offerings to the SEC’s earlier closure of the Ondo case, which signalled a friendlier line on tokenized assets.
A proof of concept, not a liquidity event
The scale keeps expectations in check. CNTN trades around $2 with a market capitalization close to $170 million as of 4 November, and the first on-chain trade moved about $30,296. The company is also an unusual first mover: it rebranded from Tharimmune in February 2026 after shifting to digital asset treasury operations, holds significant Canton Coin (CC) positions and operates as a Super Validator on the same network its shares now trade on.
Chief executive Mark Wendland pointed to broader access, greater transparency and 24/7 atomic settlement for US equities as what the structure delivers.
How the SEC weighs the exemption’s early participants, when it expires in 2031, will be shaped by trades like this one.
