Cloudflare announced on Friday that it has acquired Deno, the startup behind the namesake programming runtime.
Kenton Varda of Cloudflare said that Cloudflare will use this acquisition to enhance its Workers programming model and platform. The platform enables customers to build and run software on Cloudflare’s network. Varda is the chief engineer of Cloudflare Workers.
Deno was co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl, the creator of Node.js. The company recently launched celld, an open-source implementation of Workers. Varda wrote that this made the Cloudflare team "very happy."
Varda also stated that, contrary to a popular theory that the company makes Cloudflare Workers operate differently from other cloud platforms to create "lock-in," Cloudflare believes that open-sourcing and providing users with an exit path is good business.
Dahl wrote that his team is "joining Cloudflare to make the Workers programming model a mainstream way to build servers."
The financial terms of this acquisition were not disclosed. Deno has previously raised a total of $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia.
