Latest data from credit card transaction analysis firm Indagari shows that Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, is attracting paying consumers more rapidly. Although ChatGPT still holds a larger user base, Claude has shown significantly stronger consumer growth since 2026.
Revenue increased by approximately 75% this year.
Indagari analyzed anonymized credit card transaction data from approximately 28 million U.S. consumers, covering weekly transactions from 2025 through May 10, 2026. The scope includes subscription payments and API token expenditures. According to TechCrunch, while this dataset cannot directly reconstruct Anthropic’s total revenue or total user count, it is sufficient to reflect trend changes.
Data shows that revenue and user numbers from paying consumers for Claude have been growing month over month. Since 2026, revenue in this segment has increased by nearly 75%, indicating that Anthropic’s customer base may be expanding beyond enterprises and developers to include a broader range of individual users.
The momentum continues after the growth in March.
The report notes that Claude was previously seen as a product more geared toward enterprises, startups, and developers, especially with tools like Claude Code gaining popularity among tech users. However, the latest consumer data indicates that this positioning is changing.

TechCrunch reported that Claude experienced significant growth in March. Since then, its consumer expansion has not slowed, with momentum continuing into subsequent months. The article also noted that, following Anthropic’s refusal to allow its models to be used by the Trump administration for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons targeting U.S. citizens, product interest continued to rise.

The overall scale still lags behind ChatGPT.
In addition to payment data, the learning platform DataCamp told TechCrunch that interest in Claude has significantly increased since the beginning of the year. “Claude” has become the most searched term on the platform, even surpassing “AI” itself.
However, in terms of overall scale, ChatGPT still leads significantly. Data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower also shows that Claude has maintained growth across platforms this year, but still lags considerably behind ChatGPT.
Data from Indagari also shows that ChatGPT’s recent growth has been relatively modest, but this is largely due to its already vast user base. In other words, OpenAI still leads in total paying users, though Claude is narrowing the gap more quickly, particularly in consumer spending and brand awareness.
Additional information: TechCrunch reported that Anthropic did not comment on the above data; the conclusions cited in the article are primarily based on third-party transaction data and platform search volume statistics.
