China's technology giants are offering annual compensation approaching 1 million yuan (US$149,739) for engineers who turn AI models into commercial applications. ByteDance, Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group Holding are expanding recruitment and training for forward-deployed engineers (FDEs). FDEs collaborate directly with customers to build AI applications and integrate those applications into business operations.
Maimai, a professional networking platform in China, recorded a 1,523% increase in FDE job postings in the first seven months against the corresponding period in 2025. Maimai's findings ranked FDEs as the fastest-growing AI technical occupation among the roles surveyed.
Boss Zhipin job postings show that ByteDance advertised monthly salaries between 35,000 yuan and 65,000 yuan for FDE positions in ByteDance's AI business. The advertised packages provide 15 months of pay annually, allowing yearly compensation to reach 975,000 yuan. Official data put China's average annual disposable income at 43,377 yuan in 2025.
Boss Zhipin listings show that Ant Digital Technologies offered business-facing FDEs monthly salaries between 40,000 yuan and 60,000 yuan. Ant Digital Technologies is Ant Group's technology arm. Ant Group is a fintech affiliate of Alibaba, and Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. Other advertisements listed monthly salaries between 30,000 yuan and 60,000 yuan for Tencent positions related to FDE work. Alibaba Cloud advertised monthly pay reaching 50,000 yuan for deployment engineering positions.
AI companies in the United States are also expanding efforts to develop FDE talent. Anthropic announced a US$100 million program earlier this month to train 10,000 FDEs by the end of 2027.
However, George Wang, a senior human resources professional at a leading Beijing AI company, said the prominent salary offers represent only a small market segment. Wang said most FDE jobs do not offer such high compensation. Wang nevertheless reported strong demand for AI-native full-stack developers experienced in building AI agents as companies restructure operations around AI.
Companies in China are also training FDE workforces internally. Tencent Cloud introduced an FDE certification earlier this year, describing the certification as the industry's first. The certification targets partner engineers and developers who use Tencent Cloud's Agent Development Platform.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice in late August encouraging companies to establish FDE teams stationed at customer sites to implement AI applications. The ministry also urged universities to develop talent with the relevant skills.
Su, a Beijing-based engineer who previously headed an internal FDE team at a major internet company in China, said the role had gained value. Su linked that growing value to businesses seeking engineers who can connect technical development with commercial requirements. Su said employers seek people who quickly understand customers across industries, select appropriate AI tools and carry solutions through implementation.
ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent did not answer requests for comment.
