China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has joined forces with the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) to investigate brake failures in Maextro electric vehicles. The probe follows a viral test on Dongchedi showing brake-pedal brackets breaking during emergency stops on the Maextro V800. The luxury EV brand, co-developed by Huawei and JAC, aims to resolve the issue before October ends. With car sales down 21.7% year-on-year, the move aligns with tightening industry trends and regulatory focus. Crypto regulation and oversight are also gaining momentum globally, reflecting broader shifts in tech and market governance.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Thursday that a joint investigation team would verify reports of brake pedal failures in tests of Maextro electric vehicles. The team includes officials from the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). MIIT said the three ministry-level authorities had paid close attention to the issue. MIIT said relevant information would be released in a timely manner.

ByteDance-owned car-information platform Dongchedi released a video on October 8 showing brake-pedal brackets snapping on all three Maextro V800 multipurpose vehicles tested. The test involved emergency braking from 100km/h. The video went viral. People's Daily, the Communist Party mouthpiece, said in a commentary on Sunday that the incident underscored the importance of stronger oversight of China's rapidly developed electric vehicles.

Maextro said on Thursday that the brand would fully cooperate with the investigation to safeguard consumers' interests and support China's electric vehicle industry. Maextro said on Sunday that the brand would address the brake pedal issue by the end of this month. Huawei Technologies and JAC jointly developed Maextro, a luxury brand based in eastern China's Anhui province. JAC assembles Maextro vehicles. Huawei supplies smart-driving and digital-cockpit technology through Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance. The Maextro V800 is one of mainland China's most expensive electric vehicle models, with a base price of 766,000 yuan (US$113,582).

Analysts said the investigation statement showed Chinese authorities would act resolutely to address electric vehicle quality and reliability concerns amid a declining domestic market. Shanghai-based independent analyst Gao Shen said the internet regulator would identify online misinformation about the matter that could damage Chinese carmakers' reputations. Gao said consumers would be eager to learn the truth amid intensified regulatory investigation efforts.

MIIT and three other ministry-level departments published draft rules on Saturday requiring sufficient vetting before any new model was offered to consumers. The proposed measures include 30,000km (18,641 miles) of road testing. China's car sales fell 21.7% year on year to 13.3 million units in the first nine months of 2026. The decline resulted from reduced government support, including smaller electric vehicle purchase subsidies, and the resumption of consumption tax.

MIIT vice-minister Xin Guobin said at a press briefing in Beijing in August that new automotive products and technologies would face stricter approval procedures. Xin said products and technologies would be barred from the market unless those products and technologies passed the procedures. Beijing is also conducting a nationwide inspection campaign assessing the quality of Chinese-made cars.
