What the device actually does

The Neuracle implant, sometimes referred to as NEO, is a disk-shaped wireless device placed on the surface of the brain. It decodes motor signals and translates them into commands that control assistive devices like robotic hands.

The approved use case is narrow but meaningful. It targets individuals aged 18 to 60 with severe paralysis caused by cervical spinal cord injuries.

The surface-of-brain placement is worth noting. Unlike some competing approaches that penetrate brain tissue with electrode arrays, Neuracle’s implant sits on the cortical surface.

NeuroXess and the parallel track

While Neuracle secured the commercial approval, another Shanghai-based neurotech company is running its own ambitious program. NeuroXess is conducting a year-long clinical trial involving a paralyzed patient, building on a milestone it hit in late 2025: the successful implantation of China’s first fully wireless, battery-integrated BCI.

The company calls it a “triple-full” system, referring to the fully implanted, fully wireless, and fully battery-integrated design. NeuroXess has reportedly completed dozens of exploratory BCI cases and is focused on developing flexible, high-throughput implants.

Why China is moving fast

Brain-computer interfaces have been designated a strategic emerging industry in China’s policy framework, with support dating back to the 13th Five-Year Plan. In December 2025, new implementation opinions were released to further accelerate the sector. The 2026 government work report and the 15th Five-Year Plan both position BCI as a priority technology.

The Chinese BCI market reached approximately RMB 3.2 billion, roughly $446 million, in 2024. Neuralink’s N1 implant remains in clinical trials. Neuracle’s device is approved for sale.

What this means for investors
