Chainlink has launched CustodySync to connect qualified custodians with DeFi lending markets while keeping assets securely held within custody.
Anchorage is the first qualified custodian to adopt CustodySync.
The article states that the DeFi lending market holds over $80 billion in assets, while approximately $700 billion in digital assets remain under custody.
Institutional investors have tens of billions of dollars sitting on the sidelines, and Chainlink aims to change that. Its new CustodySync solution seeks to connect qualified custodians with decentralized finance (DeFi) lending markets without requiring institutions to move assets out of regulated custody systems.
This could be an important advancement. However, connecting traditional finance to DeFi is not just about unlocking capital—security, risk management, and operational reliability remain crucial.
Chainlink CustodySync brings custody to DeFi
Chainlink has launched CustodySync, with Anchorage as its official launch partner. The solution synchronizes custody and lending systems throughout the loan lifecycle, enabling institutions to participate in DeFi lending while their assets remain held by qualified custodians.
For custodians, the system promises to accelerate deployment and reduce operational overhead through control mechanisms managed by the custodian. Lending markets gain access to independent, verifiable data and a consistent risk framework. Meanwhile, institutions can put previously idle digital assets to work.
Anchorage is the first qualified custodian to adopt this solution, connecting its institutional clients to DeFi lending markets while maintaining regulated custody.
Data reveals a significant capital gap
This opportunity is substantial. The DeFi lending market holds over $80 billion, while approximately $700 billion in digital assets remain custodied.
This gap becomes even more apparent when compared to the approximately $250 trillion in traditional custodied assets, with digital assets accounting for less than 0.5% of the traditional custodied size.
However, capital does not automatically flow simply because infrastructure exists. Institutions require reliable systems that meet their regulatory and operational requirements.
Can CustodySync solve the risks associated with DeFi?
The custody and lending systems were not originally designed to work together. Even if the platforms are connected, inconsistent loan valuations may occur, leading to premature or delayed liquidations and exposing borrowers and lenders to financial risk.
CustodySync aims to improve coordination between these systems. Whether it can deliver the reliability required by institutions will be key to its adoption.
For Chainlink, this claim is straightforward: institutional investors should not have to choose between regulated custody and on-chain lending. CustodySync may help bridge this gap, but real adoption will determine whether this $70 billion opportunity becomes a reality.
