CoinDesk reports:

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will hold its inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting on August 20, with topics including cryptocurrency regulation, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets. In the absence of progress on comprehensive digital asset legislation by Congress, this meeting serves as a key window into regulators' short-term actions.

The August 20 meeting focused on existing permissions.

According to the CFTC’s agenda, the first panel on cryptocurrency will last approximately 50 minutes and will focus on the lack of a comprehensive market structure framework at the federal level, overlapping regulatory jurisdictions, and recent regulatory actions. The agenda also mentions cybersecurity, operational resilience, and cryptocurrency infrastructure.

The core of the discussion was what regulatory agencies could do within their existing statutory authority. The CFTC can interpret rules and push for certain updates, but expanding its statutory jurisdiction still requires new legislation from Congress. This meeting will not vote on any cryptocurrency rules, and advisory committee recommendations do not automatically represent the official position of the commission.

The CLARITY Act has been scheduled for September 15.

The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act has not been abandoned, but the Senate has not yet entered formal consideration. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed a cloture motion on the motion to proceed, with the procedural milestone scheduled for September 15.

This procedural vote still needs to overcome the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. Even if passed, it only advances the bill to the next stage of consideration, where further debate, amendment processing, and a final vote will follow; if the Senate version differs from the House version, additional reconciliation will be required.

SEC cancels scheduled cryptocurrency meeting

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has canceled its scheduled cryptocurrency conference for August 14, without providing a reason or a new date. The originally planned agenda included more targeted rules for issuing crypto investment contracts.

The next key dates include: the CFTC meeting on August 20, the public written comment deadline on August 27, and the procedural vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15. According to the CFTC’s official website, the commission currently has only one commissioner, Chairman Michael Selig, in office, below the statutory complement of five.
