The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is advancing its Reg CAM framework to provide crypto exchanges with a voluntary path to federal oversight. Led by Michael Passalacqua, the initiative targets platforms offering leveraged, margin, or financed trading to retail users; spot trading without leverage is excluded. The public comment period is currently open, with mixed reactions from the industry. Altcoins to watch may experience shifts as trading volume patterns adapt to increased regulatory clarity.

Odaily Planet Daily reports: Michael Passalacqua, Senior Advisor to CFTC Chairman Mike Selig and Head of the Innovation Task Force, explained that following the setback of the Clarity Act, the CFTC’s proposed Reg CAM—“Crypto Asset Markets” framework—aims to provide a voluntary pathway for crypto asset trading platforms to join a nationally unified regulatory regime led by the CFTC. This arrangement primarily targets platforms offering leveraged, margin, or financed trading to retail customers, enabling them to move away from the fragmented state-by-state money transmitter licensing landscape; purely spot, non-leveraged trading generally remains outside this mandatory framework. Passalacqua noted that the rulemaking process is currently in the comment period, and it remains uncertain whether the industry finds the proposal attractive.
