ChainThink news: On August 6, according to relevant sources, Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, stated at last month’s all-hands meeting of the Seed team that the company will not treat model distillation as a shortcut to catch up with large models, even if this causes short-term lag behind domestic competitors.
Zhang Yiming asked the team to be willing to sacrifice short-term gains for long-term goals. Distillation typically refers to having a newer model learn from the outputs of a stronger model to save training time and computational resources.
ByteDance internally believes that not adopting the distillation pathway may make it harder for the Seed language model to catch up with domestic peers such as DeepSeek, Kimi, and Qwen in the short term.
The company also monitors potential political risks, as ByteDance has long faced scrutiny from the U.S. government over TikTok.
Previously, Anthropic accused DeepSeek, Moonshot, MiniMax, Zhipu, and Alibaba of large-scale extraction of Claude's capabilities, but did not name ByteDance.
