According to BeInCrypto, on August 31, Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) ruled to suspend the digital campaign activities of presidential candidate Renan Santos and freeze approximately 3.3 million Brazilian reais (about $640,000) of public campaign funds. Judge Dias Toffoli determined that Santos’s 16 campaign social media accounts were registered 12 days after the deadline, violating regulations; as a result, he is prohibited from participating in debates and running paid political advertisements, with a fine of 50,000 reais (about $10,000) per violation. On August 13, Santos publicly pledged at the "Blockchain Rio 2026" conference that, if elected, he would establish a national Bitcoin reserve, transform Rio de Janeiro into an "crypto-friendly" city, and abolish the Financial Operations Tax (IOF), making him the only candidate in this election to openly support a Bitcoin reserve. Santos labeled the ruling as "censorship" and stated he will appeal. His candidacy remains intact, and in-person campaign activities may continue. Brazil’s presidential election will be held on October 4.

Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court suspended Renan Santos’s digital campaign and froze R$3.3 million ($640,000) in public funds due to late registration of 16 social media accounts. Judge Dias Toffoli barred him from participating in debates and paid advertisements, imposing a fine of R$50,000 ($10,000) per violation. A pro-Bitcoin candidate, Santos condemned the ruling as censorship and plans to appeal. His in-person campaign continues ahead of the October 4 election. The case raises questions about CFT compliance and how MiCA-like frameworks may influence future crypto-related political activities in Brazil.
