While Bitcoin mining is not illegal in Brazil, the devices were illegally connected to the power grid, causing Cemig, the local utility company, to estimate monthly losses of around 60,000 reais (approximately $11,800). A 37-year-old employee at the recycling facility was arrested on the spot for theft and fencing, as he could not explain the origin of the equipment or provide any invoices. Police have also opened an investigation against a 31-year-old couple responsible for the business. Authorities are currently tracing the flow of the mined cryptocurrency.
