Investor sentiment turned negative as Brazil ETFs plunged after Lula’s election win. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) dropped 27.3% in premarket trading, while the Franklin FTSE Brazil ETF (FLBR) fell 21.6%. Petrobras (PBR) and MercadoLibre (MELI) also declined sharply. Concerns over fiscal policy and political direction weighed on trading volume. The U.S. session will show if the selloff continues or if a rebound emerges.

The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) declined 27.3% in Monday premarket trading after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday's presidential runoff. The Franklin FTSE Brazil ETF (FLBR) fell 21.6%. Lula's victory challenged investor expectations for a political change and more orthodox fiscal policy. Brazil-focused ETFs face a volatile U.S. trading session.

Petrobras (PBR), Brazil's state-controlled oil company, dropped 20% in Monday premarket trading at publication. MercadoLibre (MELI), whose largest market is Brazil, fell 11%. The 9:30 a.m. ET opening will test whether selling persists or an oversold rebound develops. Premarket trading has lower liquidity and wider spreads, so regular-session opening prices may differ substantially.

Investors are reconsidering Brazil's fiscal outlook, public debt and interest-rate trajectory. Government spending proposals, the 2027 budget and the administration's capacity to cooperate with Congress could affect sentiment. A decline in the Brazilian real could deepen losses for U.S. investors who own Brazil's equities.

EWZ follows the MSCI Brazil 25/50 Index. FLBR tracks the FTSE Brazil Capped Index. Both funds hold exposure to Brazil's financial companies, Petrobras and Vale (VALE), but the funds assign different portfolio weights. EWZ's steep premarket fall could offer a momentum-trading opportunity while increasing the possibility of a sharp recovery. FLBR's smaller loss does not by itself demonstrate stronger resilience.

The bearish-continuation setup calls for the ETF to fall below volume-weighted average price (VWAP) and breach the opening-range low established during the first 5 to 15 minutes. A possible short entry follows a rebound that fails to recover VWAP or the breakdown level, with the price then turning downward again. Confirmation requires a candle closing below the breakdown level, preferably alongside rising selling volume. The setup becomes invalid if the price recovers VWAP and stays above VWAP, or exceeds the rejection swing high. An extended decline far below VWAP carries the risk of a sharp rebound that prompts short covering.

The oversold-bounce setup requires the ETF to establish an initial low, close a 5-minute candle above VWAP and remain above VWAP during a later pullback. A possible long entry follows a higher low and a renewed upward move. Confirmation comes from a break above the pullback high, ideally accompanied by stronger buying volume. The setup becomes invalid if the price breaches the confirmed higher low, or falls below VWAP without recovering VWAP. A short-lived move above VWAP without sustained buying can falsely signal a reversal.

The relative-strength setup requires FLBR to preserve the opening-range low and recover VWAP while EWZ stays below VWAP and reaches new lows. Confirmation requires FLBR to remain above VWAP during a pullback and maintain stronger performance than EWZ. The setup becomes invalid if FLBR falls below VWAP and breaches the intraday low, or if EWZ recovers VWAP and starts outperforming FLBR. Portfolio and liquidity differences can produce temporary performance gaps between the funds. Neither an upward nor a downward direction is confirmed until regular-session trading establishes a price structure. Waiting for a clearly defined setup may be preferable to pursuing the initial move during the news-driven selloff.
