Bluesky’s AI assistant Attie, unveiled at the ATmosphere conference on March 28, has expanded into a full research tool for on-chain news and AI + crypto news. It now lets users query trends, conversations, and data across Bluesky and the AT Protocol. Built on Anthropic’s Claude, Attie is the first agentic social app on the open protocol. It faced over 125,000 blocks shortly after launch. Bluesky’s model avoids tokens and blockchain, offering a different path for decentralized social platforms.

Bluesky’s AI assistant Attie, which launched at the ATmosphere conference on March 28, has quietly leveled up. What started as a tool for generating custom social feeds through natural language prompts is now a full-blown research assistant, letting users query news, trends, and conversations across Bluesky and other apps built on the AT Protocol.

The upgrade positions Attie as what Bluesky calls the first “agentic social app” on its open protocol. It’s powered by Anthropic’s Claude, and the idea is straightforward: instead of configuring filters and algorithms like a developer, you just ask Attie what you want to know.

What Attie actually does now

The original version of Attie was essentially a feed-builder. You’d describe the kind of content you wanted to see, and it would assemble a custom timeline.

The expanded version goes considerably further. Users can now ask Attie questions about what’s happening across the entire ATmosphere ecosystem, the growing collection of apps and services built on the AT Protocol’s shared data layer. That means querying conversations, identifying emerging topics, and surfacing trends across multiple interoperable applications, not just Bluesky itself.

Jay Graber, Bluesky’s former CEO who now serves as chief innovation officer, framed the tool as making social data exploration feel like having a conversation rather than configuring software. She oversees the Exploration team alongside CTO Paul Frazee, and Attie appears to be the team’s flagship project.

The tool operates as an optional standalone app. Nobody is forced to interact with it.

125,000 blocks and counting

Attie racked up over 125,000 blocks shortly after its launch, making it the second-most-blocked account on all of Bluesky. The backlash reflects a deep-seated tension in decentralized social communities, where users value control over their data and remain skeptical of AI tools operating within those environments.

The fact that Attie exists as an optional, standalone application rather than a baked-in platform feature gives users genuine choice.

The no-token approach and what it means for crypto

Attie doesn’t have a token. The AT Protocol doesn’t have a token. Bluesky has been deliberately, almost aggressively, non-crypto in its approach to decentralization. The protocol emphasizes data portability and interoperability through a federated architecture, not a blockchain-based one.

This matters for the crypto world because Attie represents a competing vision of what “decentralized” can mean. While projects like Farcaster, Lens Protocol, and DeSo have built social layers with token incentives and on-chain components, Bluesky is proving that a decentralized social protocol can gain significant traction without any of that infrastructure.
