Odaily Planet Daily reports that Blockstream has submitted a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal with specific upgrade recommendations for its post-quantum signature scheme, SHRINCS. SHRINCS has already undergone production testing on Blockstream’s Liquid sidechain, with a minimum signature size of 548 bytes—approximately nine times larger than Bitcoin’s current 64-byte Schnorr signatures, but smaller than NIST-approved schemes such as SPHINCS+. Blockstream’s research shows that adopting SHRINCS would allow Bitcoin to maintain a throughput of approximately 3 TPS, close to current levels; in contrast, adopting NIST-approved schemes could reduce throughput to between 0.36 and 0.5 TPS.
