Bitcoin news reports that the cryptocurrency added 2.27 million new wallets during the week of August 8, with active wallets reaching 751,000—a 2026 high. The growth occurred amid a firmware flaw in Coldcard hardware wallets that led to over $116 million in Bitcoin losses. The vulnerability, affecting Mk3 to Mk5 and Q models, reduced entropy to 40 or 72 bits. Coinkite released a patch and advised users to transfer their funds. Bitcoin analysis indicates the incident underscores the importance of wallet security.

According to ME News, on August 8 (UTC+8), Bitcoin saw 2.27 million new wallets added this week, with 751,000 active wallets—marking the highest on-chain activity in several months. On July 31, active addresses peaked near 978,000, approximately 1.6 times the daily average for July. The first week of August averaged about 751,000 active addresses, surpassing July’s daily average of roughly 610,000. Daily exchange inflows averaged $1.55 billion, down from $1.67 billion in July, with no significant corresponding buying activity on exchanges. This surge in activity is linked to a firmware vulnerability in Coinkite’s Coldcard hardware wallets. The flaw affects certain Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and Q devices, where seed generation relied on a software-based random number generator, reducing actual entropy to approximately 40 or 72 bits. Since July 30, over $116 million in Bitcoin has been lost due to this issue. Affected users have transferred their funds to new addresses and replaced compromised devices. Coinkite has released a firmware patch and a detailed entropy remediation disclosure; the vulnerability stems from a firmware-level random number generation issue and is not a defect in the Bitcoin protocol itself.
