Bitcoin network activity surged this week, with 2.27 million new wallets and 751,000 active wallets recorded. Whale activity also increased, as on-chain transactions reached a 2026 high. On July 31, active addresses hit 978,000—1.6 times the monthly average. A firmware flaw in Coldcard hardware wallets—impacting Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and Q models—reduced entropy to 40 or 72 bits, resulting in over $116 million in losses since July 30. Coinkite has released a firmware update and an entropy disclosure document. Affected users are urged to move their funds and replace their devices.

Odaily Planet Daily reports: This week, Bitcoin saw 2.27 million new wallets created and 751,000 active wallets, marking the highest on-chain activity in several months. On July 31, active addresses peaked near 978,000—approximately 1.6 times the daily average for July. The daily average for the first week of August was about 751,000, higher than July’s average of approximately 610,000. Daily exchange inflows averaged around $1.55 billion, down from $1.67 billion in July, with no significant corresponding buying activity on exchanges. This surge in activity is linked to a firmware vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets from Coinkite. The flaw affects certain Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and Q devices, where seed generation relied on a software-based random number generator, reducing actual entropy to approximately 40 or 72 bits. Since July 30, over $116 million in Bitcoin has been lost due to this issue. Affected users have transferred their funds to new addresses and replaced their compromised devices. Coinkite has released a firmware patch and a detailed entropy repair disclosure document. The vulnerability stems from a firmware-level random number generation issue and is not a defect in the Bitcoin protocol itself.
