Odaily Planet Daily reports: Bitcoin’s next major protocol upgrade may be the BIP-54 soft fork, named “Big Consensus Cleanup,” designed to fix four vulnerabilities in the network’s consensus rules: time-warp attacks, “poison” blocks requiring lengthy validation, a 64-byte transaction vulnerability in the Merkle tree, and replay risks from duplicate coinbase transactions. The proposal was first drafted by developer Matt Corallo in March 2019, officially received a BIP number in April 2025, had its test vectors merged by the end of 2025, and began testing on the Bitcoin Inquisition Signet network in February 2026.

Bitcoin’s next network upgrade, a soft fork called “Big Consensus Cleanup” (BIP-54), addresses four security vulnerabilities. The blockchain upgrade resolves time-warp attacks, long-validation “toxic” blocks, a 64-byte Merkle tree issue, and replay risks from duplicate coinbase transactions. Matt Corallo drafted the proposal in March 2019; it received a BIP number in April 2025, test vectors were merged by year-end, and testing commenced on the Bitcoin Inquisition Signet network in February 2026.
