ME News reports that on October 13 (UTC+8), according to BlocksBridge Consulting’s Miner Weekly briefing, Bitcoin mining companies expanding into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are facing significantly divergent borrowing costs, as lenders are imposing stricter scrutiny on large-scale data center projects. The briefing notes that securing large AI clients is only part of the challenge; mining firms must also raise billions of dollars to purchase computing equipment, construct data centers, and ensure the power infrastructure required to fulfill contractual obligations. BlocksBridge states that major lenders have become more selective about data center loans, with decisions increasingly hinging on borrower creditworthiness, contract terms, and the project’s path to completion. IREN’s transition from Bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure exemplifies this disparity in financing costs: the company secured $3.65 billion in GPU financing in June at a blended interest rate of 6%, followed by another $2.4 billion financing in August at a fixed rate of 9%. Although these two agreements relate to different projects and are not directly comparable, they illustrate how borrowing costs can vary significantly even within the same company. Financing arrangements may also carry costs beyond interest: in another transaction involving Cipher Digital, Google provided a guarantee for a $1.4 billion lease obligation in exchange for warrants representing 5.4% equity in Cipher, which could dilute existing shareholders’ ownership. The rising demand for financing underscores the broader challenges mining companies face in entering the AI market. VanEck data shows that at the peak of the Bitcoin bull market in October last year, mining companies’ debt had surged by approximately 500% compared to Q2 2024. (Source: ChainCatcher)

Bitcoin news reports that Bitcoin miners seeking to expand into AI infrastructure face a $50 billion funding gap, according to MetaEra. BlocksBridge Consulting notes that, in addition to securing AI clients, firms must raise billions for hardware, data centers, and power. IREN, which is transitioning to AI, secured $36.5 billion in GPU financing at 6% in June and $24 billion at 9% in August.
