Bitcoin tested the $80,000 support and resistance level after climbing to $81,257, then pulling back to $78,000–$79,000. The move followed Bessent’s bond buyback plan, which pressured the dollar. Analysts see $80,000–$83,000 as a key barrier, with a break above $83,000 offering a better risk-to-reward ratio toward $85,000. ETFs added $1.9B–$2.4B, while short liquidations topped $2B. The PCE report and Jackson Hole meeting will be key.

Bitcoin punched through $80,000 for the first time since mid-May, reaching an intraday peak near $81,257 before settling back into the $78,000 to $79,000 range. The move represented a roughly 22% to 28% gain over the preceding week.

The catalyst for the rally was surprisingly old-school: bonds. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 20 that the government would substantially increase its long-dated bond buybacks, effectively doubling planned purchases. That drove bond yields lower and weakened the dollar, creating the exact cocktail that risk assets like Bitcoin tend to thrive on.

The $80K wall and what’s behind it

Analysts have flagged the $80,000 to $83,000 zone as a critical resistance band, shaped by historical price action and volume patterns. A sustained push above $83,000 could open the door to a move toward $85,000 or higher, while a failure to hold ground might drag the price back toward the mid-$70,000s.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded weekly inflows estimated between $1.9B and $2.4B, the strongest showing since October 2025. Meanwhile, short position liquidations exceeded $2B during the rally, with some estimates placing the figure as high as $4B.

Two data points that could move everything

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation report is due on August 26. The PCE measure is the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge of price pressures.

The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium runs August 27 through 29. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is expected to deliver remarks that could offer clues about the central bank’s thinking on the path forward for monetary policy.

What the ETF flows are really saying

The Treasury’s decision to ramp up bond buybacks is part of the puzzle. By suppressing long-term yields, the government is effectively making fixed-income less attractive on a relative basis.

The $83,000 level stands as the line in the sand. A clean break above it on strong volume could set up a run toward $85,000 to $100,000, according to analysts tracking the resistance zone. A rejection at that level could see Bitcoin retrace to the $74,000 to $76,000 area.
