Although Bitcoin (BTC) has retreated from its push toward $100,000, insights from OpenAI’s ChatGPT suggest the cryptocurrency could reach a $5 trillion market capitalization in 2029.
At its press-time price of $81,950 and a circulating supply of 20.09 million BTC, Bitcoin would need to climb to approximately $248,880 to reach the milestone.
The Bitcoin $5 trillion market cap prediction implies a gain of about 204% from its current value.
ChatGPT identified 2029 as its central estimate, although the timeline could shift depending on market conditions. A strong bull market could bring the milestone within reach in 2028, while prolonged selling pressure or weaker institutional demand could delay it until 2030 or 2031.
What will take Bitcoin to $5 trillion?
Reaching approximately $249,000 would require sustained demand over several years. One factor supporting the bullish outlook is the expansion of institutional access through spot Bitcoin ETFs, which allow investors to gain exposure without directly holding the cryptocurrency.
However, ETF flows have recently weakened. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $82.4 million in net outflows on October 16, including $71.8 million from BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and $10.6 million from Fidelity’s FBTC. Weekly net outflows reached $228.4 million between October 12 and 16.
On the other hand, Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), continued accumulating Bitcoin despite the market weakness. The company bought 250 BTC for approximately $21.5 million during the week of October 5–11, at an average price of $86,194, bringing its reported holdings to 848,250 BTC.
The next Bitcoin halving, expected in 2028, could also support the longer-term outlook by reducing the block reward from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. This would slow the rate of new supply entering the market, although halvings do not guarantee price increases.
Meanwhile, Bernstein analysts have projected that Bitcoin could reach approximately $300,000 in 2029. At that price, its market capitalization would exceed $5 trillion, assuming a circulating supply close to 20 million BTC. This provides a bullish comparison for ChatGPT’s estimate, although forecasts remain uncertain.
Starting from $81,950, Bitcoin would need to appreciate by approximately 44.8% annually over three years to reach $248,880 by October 2029. This is a mathematical estimate, not a prediction that BTC will follow a smooth upward trajectory.
Under the bullish scenario, Bitcoin could reach $5 trillion in 2028 if institutional buying accelerates, financial conditions improve and the next halving strengthens market expectations. The base case places the milestone in 2029, while a slower recovery could push it into 2030 or 2031. Reaching the target in 2027 would require an unusually rapid rally.

Bitcoin’s trajectory will also depend on broader economic conditions. Persistent inflation, restrictive interest rates and weaker appetite for risk assets could constrain demand. Conversely, improving liquidity and stronger institutional adoption could support a sustained rally.
Key Bitcoin prices to watch
ChatGPT also highlighted the importance of Bitcoin’s near-term price action. The cryptocurrency retreated from the $84,000 area and briefly fell below $80,000 amid inflation concerns, ETF outflows and broader market weakness.
The $79,694–80,000 range is a key support zone. A sustained break below it could expose Bitcoin to further declines toward $78,000 and potentially $76,500.
On the upside, BTC needs to reclaim $82,600 before challenging resistance between $84,000 and $87,000. A recovery through that zone would improve the near-term outlook, particularly if accompanied by renewed ETF inflows.
