Bitcoin and Ethereum extended their weekend recovery, although on-chain indicators and derivatives positioning suggest significant obstacles remain. CryptoSlate data showed that Bitcoin briefly climbed above $84,000 after falling toward $80,000 during last week's selloff. Ethereum recovered above $2,500, reversing part of its recent losses as buying activity returned to the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin's recovery gained momentum during Sunday's trading session as traders appeared to capitalize on a concentration of liquidity above the prevailing price. CryptoQuant analyst J.A. Maartunn said on Oct. 11 that a liquidity cluster formed just above Bitcoin's trading level, creating an opportunity to push prices higher. Maartunn said traders appeared to establish a substantial wall of buy orders beneath the market, supporting Bitcoin's advance toward that liquidity. The spot Bid/Ask Ratio rose to 0.3. The ratio measures buying and selling liquidity within 1% of the prevailing price. The increase indicated stronger visible buying interest relative to selling orders. However, that liquidity can disappear if traders cancel orders. Checkonchain data highlighted by analyst Darkfost on Oct. 11 showed that approximately 53% of Bitcoin's invested capital had an estimated acquisition price above $83,000. Bitcoin traded around $83,000 at the time. The measure weights acquisition prices by invested capital, giving larger positions more weight. The largest concentration of acquisition costs sits between $84,000 and $85,000, creating a potential obstacle to further gains. Investors who acquired Bitcoin in that region could become more willing to sell near their estimated acquisition prices, increasing the supply buyers must absorb. A sustained move through the region would suggest sufficient buying demand to overcome the potential selling pressure. A failure to overcome that pressure could leave Bitcoin vulnerable to another decline. Darkfost identified $77,000 to $79,000 as a possible support area. Ethereum's recovery faces a challenge as derivatives positioning among larger market participants continues to deteriorate. Alphractal CEO Joao Wedson noted on Oct. 10 that Ethereum's 30-day and 180-day open-interest deltas were both negative. Wedson also noted weakening readings in Alphractal's Whale vs. Retail Delta indicator. Wedson interpreted those readings as evidence that major traders had reduced bullish exposure while increasingly favoring defensive or short positions. The negative open-interest readings indicate that outstanding derivatives positions contracted over the measured periods. However, Ethereum's total futures open interest remained substantial at approximately 10.58 million ETH. That amount represents roughly $26.5 billion in notional exposure at $2,500 per ETH. Weakening bullish positioning combined with substantial remaining exposure increases the potential for sharp price movements if volatility returns. A renewed decline could force leveraged long positions into liquidation, potentially adding selling pressure and accelerating losses. Conversely, a sustained recovery could force short sellers to close positions, contributing to further upward momentum. Wedson warned that Ethereum's derivatives market remains vulnerable to further liquidations despite the recent reduction in outstanding positions.
Bitcoin Approaches $85,000 Resistance as On-Chain Indicators Signal Potential Sell Pressure
CryptoSlateShare
On-chain data shows Bitcoin nearing $85,000 resistance after climbing above $84,000. A liquidity cluster above current levels suggests potential sell pressure, as on-chain analysis reveals a high concentration of buying above $83,000. Ethereum’s rebound faces headwinds with weaker positioning from larger participants, marked by negative open-interest deltas and reduced bullish exposure.
