Martian Finance reports that on November 6, following Warren Buffett’s departure as CEO, Berkshire Hathaway is attempting to expand its investments in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. However, the technology investment strategy championed by new CEO Greg Abel has quickly faced market headwinds. As Alphabet’s stock price declined, Berkshire Hathaway’s unrealized losses on its holdings are estimated at approximately $3 billion. In June, Berkshire invested about $10 billion in Alphabet, purchasing shares at approximately $350 per share. Buffett previously stated that the decision to buy Alphabet stock was his own. According to foreign media estimates, as of the end of June, Berkshire held approximately 106 million shares of Alphabet, including both voting and non-voting shares. Since June, Alphabet’s stock has fallen more than 24%, dropping below its discounted subscription price. Its third-quarter earnings fell short of market expectations, and massive AI-related capital expenditures pushed free cash flow into negative territory, further eroding investor confidence. Additionally, Berkshire has cumulatively invested $930 million in the Italian tech firm Bending Spoons; its stock initially rose after Berkshire’s additional investment but then declined for several consecutive weeks. Cathy Seifert, an analyst at CFRA Research, believes Berkshire’s increased exposure to tech stocks may be a deliberate long-term adjustment, but the market must consider whether these investments were made too late. Meyer Shields, an analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, noted that Abel may view AI-related investments as a long-term strategic play rather than an attempt to influence market sentiment through short-term trading—a stance consistent with Berkshire’s traditional value investing philosophy. In contrast to pressure on its tech holdings, Berkshire’s Class A shares rose to a record high of approximately $875,000 on Thursday, up about 16% over the past month. As of the end of the second quarter, the company held approximately $365.5 billion in cash and related liquid assets, retaining the capacity to increase investments should asset prices decline. Berkshire plans to release its third-quarter results on November 7; the market will focus on performance in insurance, railroads, and consumer businesses, as well as changes in cash reserves and share repurchases.
