Aztec Labs has pushed privacy-native smart contracts a big step closer to reality with the alpha launch of Aztec v5 — an execution layer designed to let Ethereum apps mix confidential and public state inside the same layer-2 environment. What’s new - Aztec v5 is live on mainnet in alpha and brings a client-side zero-knowledge execution engine powered by Noir, Aztec’s domain-specific language for private smart contracts. - Instead of running confidential transactions across all validators, private computation happens on users’ devices. The client computes the transaction, creates recursive SNARK proofs locally, and submits only the proofs for on-chain verification. That approach hides inputs, amounts and identities while preserving Ethereum’s security guarantees. - Aztec introduced a hybrid state model to solve a common privacy-chain problem: contention over shared public state. Private data sits in UTXO-like note trees; public data uses key-value trees. Private functions can schedule deferred public calls processed later in the same transaction lifecycle, enabling confidential and public operations to interoperate deterministically without race conditions. Why it matters - Developers can now build dApps that combine confidential user data with Ethereum’s public DeFi ecosystem — for example confidential order matching, private liquidity provisioning, and selective-compliance systems that disclose only what’s needed via viewing keys. - By keeping details hidden until state is committed, Aztec’s model also makes front-running and many MEV strategies harder to execute because pending transaction data is no longer visible to adversaries. - The platform’s programmable privacy aims to be more than anonymous token transfers: it enables fine-grained, verifiable disclosure and compliance workflows that retain privacy by default. Identity and compliance - Aztec has been pushing programmable privacy as a broader vision. In an April 2025 interview, CEO Zac Williamson said on-chain privacy needs three pillars — user privacy, confidential transaction data, and private smart contract execution — and argued privacy shouldn’t be siloed: “all crypto will be private” as these capabilities become mainstream. - In May 2026 Aztec acquired ZKPassport and pledged to keep it open source. ZKPassport brings zero-knowledge identity tooling into Aztec’s stack, enabling selective disclosure (for example proving age or nationality without revealing raw identity) and already has been used to reduce Sybil attacks and run sanctions screening during an AZTEC token sale. Rollout and early access - Aztec says apps will roll out over the coming week, starting with Nyx (initially invite-only, briefly opened to all for a 24-hour window), and promises the “fastest private transactions” they’ve shipped so far. Security context - The v5 launch comes shortly after Aztec disclosed two incidents involving deprecated legacy products. Earlier this month Aztec said roughly $2 million was moved from an immutable payments contract launched in 2021 and discontinued in 2022; the team had no admin keys to pause or upgrade it. Separately, an older RollupProcessorV3 contract tied to Aztec Connect lost about $2.1 million. Aztec Labs and the Aztec Foundation stressed these exploits affected legacy contracts that remained live on Ethereum after being sunset and are unrelated to the active Aztec network or the AZTEC ERC-20 token. Bottom line Aztec v5’s alpha brings a practical, developer-friendly approach to private smart contracts on Ethereum: local ZK execution, recursive SNARK verification, and a hybrid private/public state model that preserves composability with public DeFi. If the alpha proves robust, it could reshape how privacy and compliance are handled in on-chain applications.
