Odaily Planet Daily report: Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently asked its engineering team to reduce server CPU resource waste to ensure sufficient capacity to meet growing customer demand for EC2 cloud server services in the future.
According to insiders, AWS management met with engineers in May and stated that the company needs to conserve computing resources as much as possible, including server capacity running on central processing units (CPUs) and AI chip computing resources that have been in long-term short supply.
Sources say AWS is currently facing tight cloud computing capacity, particularly as demand for AI infrastructure grows rapidly, intensifying competition among enterprise customers for computing resources. The company aims to free up additional available capacity by optimizing the utilization of its existing infrastructure.
This internal demand reflects the growing computational pressure faced by major cloud providers due to the AI wave. As generative AI applications expand, cloud vendors require not only large quantities of AI acceleration chips such as GPUs, but also additional CPU, storage, and network resources to support overall computational workloads.
As one of the world’s largest cloud service providers, AWS has continuously expanded its data center investments in recent years, but the rapid growth of AI services has pushed the entire industry into a phase of “computing power shortage.” Analysts believe that improving the utilization efficiency of existing servers has become a key response strategy for cloud providers beyond new infrastructure construction.
