Australia’s eSafety regulator has launched legal action against Telegram over alleged failures to remove pro-terror content. The agency seeks a potential A$54.6 million penalty after a year-long investigation into Telegram’s safety practices. Officials allege the messaging service failed to address harmful extremist material despite user reports and safety concerns.
Investigation highlights safety concerns
The regulator claims Telegram allowed terrorist videos and extreme violence content to remain accessible for extended periods. Additionally, officials say the platform failed to remove related accounts, groups, and channels after receiving warnings. The investigation also identified delays involving material connected to major attacks, including Christchurch and Buffalo incidents.
Moreover, eSafety alleges Telegram lacked strong measures to prevent repeated distribution of unlawful content. The platform serves more than one billion users globally and attracts about 1.5 million Australian visits monthly. Hence, regulators argue that large digital services must protect communities from serious online harms.
Regulatory action targets online responsibility
eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the case demonstrates the importance of stronger platform accountability. Consequently, eSafety continues pushing services to improve detection, reporting systems, and user protections. The regulator emphasized that Telegram groups can reach 200,000 members, creating significant risks when harmful content spreads.
