Yesterday, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes announced his return on X, revealing a new project called Flop Labs. Arthur stated, “FLOP is food for your AI agent.”
Flop Labs marks Arthur's first high-profile return to the role of "project lead" after leaving BitMEX and spending years active as an investor and project advisor, with his announcement framed as "coming out of retirement" to declare his triumphant return. Although BitMEX has since shut down, it remains undeniably successful for Arthur and crypto users alike—it pioneered perpetual contracts and dominated the majority of trading volume in the crypto derivatives market at its peak. As a result, his personally led next project immediately drew significant community attention upon announcement.

What is FlOP Labs, and how does it differ from other AI Agent projects?
Several AI Agent projects that were once or are currently popular have already emerged in the market, such as Bittensor, Virtuals Protocol, x402, and ai16z. Although Flop Labs is still in a very early conceptual stage, its positioning already differs significantly from these projects.
Flop Labs is positioned as a native currency network for the AI Agent economy, which Arthur calls "fuel for your AI agent," aiming to serve as the native currency and verifiable computation settlement layer for the Agentic Economy, rather than building agents themselves, launching platforms, or operating purely as a compute network.
Flop Labs' core concept is Proof-of-Useful-Inference, aiming to make genuinely useful AI inference computations an integral part of consensus and security, with FLOP serving as the native currency for agents to acquire computing resources, store memory, and conduct business activities. However, the official website has not yet released a full whitepaper or code for Proof-of-Useful-Inference, and it is currently only positioned at a conceptual level as the network's core protocol.
Based on previous similar projects and public literature, the operation of Flop may be inferred (not officially disclosed):
Traditional Proof-of-Work requires miners to perform massive amounts of meaningless hash computations to prove resource consumption and earn block creation rights. Proof-of-Useful-Inference aims to replace this “useless computation” with genuinely valuable AI inference tasks, such as running machine learning models for prediction, generation, and analysis. This approach ensures that computational power serves dual purposes: securing the blockchain (as consensus weight) and generating external economic value (by providing inference services to AI Agents). The process generally works as follows: users/Agents submit AI inference tasks by spending FLOPs; miners provide computational resources to execute these tasks (designed to integrate with block construction) and submit proofs of the inference results; validators verify the correctness of the inference results; and miners receive block rewards and potentially inference fees.
Flop Labs' Four Role Designs and Token Mechanism
Four key roles are involved in Flop Labs:

Miner: Provides computing resources such as GPUs to run AI inference requests and earns FLOP block rewards and inference fees;
Validator: As the network’s trust layer, confirms that miners have delivered the services paid for by the Agent and stores the Agent’s memory. Earns FLOP from block rewards, inference payments, and memory storage/retrieval;
Agent: Spend FLOP to purchase computing power, and spend FLOP to store or retrieve memories to gain "consciousness"; conduct commercial transactions between Agents within the network;
KOL and Community Partner: Promote the network, encourage community participation (becoming a Miner/Validator/Deploying an Agent), and earn FLOP based on community activity within the network.
Additionally, Arthur also revealed the tokenomics outline for FLOP: no presale, no VC involvement, 100% Fair Launch.
On the timeline:
- Large airdrop in the fourth quarter of 2026 (the airdrop occurs one quarter before the Flop network launch);
- The genesis block will be launched in the first quarter of 2027.
The only known way to participate in the airdrop is to apply for one of the four roles in Flop Labs. Flop’s official team has opened application forms for GPU Providers (Miners), Validators, and KOLs/Creators. Interested users can visit their official website to fill out the form and participate.
Conclusion
A significant portion of the community holds optimistic expectations regarding the airdrop. However, others are skeptical, as Flop Lbas has not yet released a whitepaper, tokenomics, the blockchain it operates on, the smart contract address, or a third-party audit report; some technical individuals have doubts about its consensus mechanism implementation, verification and proof methods, and underlying chain selection. Additionally, some believe the project’s name, Flop (meaning failure), carries a negative connotation.
Arthur posted this morning: Someone asked why he launched an AI + crypto project while believing AI is a bubble about to burst. He argued that the bubble exists in “the debt used to build data centers, and the stocks of unprofitable cloud service providers and AI labs”—not in the AI technology and applications themselves. Arthur is 100% confident in the Agentic Economy, and the excess computing power driven by large-scale investments can support Flop Labs’ growth.
Flop Labs is Arthur Hayes’s high-profile attempt to address currency and verifiable computation issues in the agent economy by integrating “useful reasoning” into consensus design, amid the AI Agent hype. The narrative is compelling, but substantive progress remains in its early stages, with limited public disclosure. Currently, the only publicly available GitHub repository from Flop Labs is named “technocore-chat,” a zero-authentication, HTTP-native chat and note service designed for AI agents, maintained by FLOP Labs, with no additional protocol-level technical details revealed.
Whether AI agents will actually use FLOP to purchase computing power depends on whether the team can deliver verifiable technological achievements and ecosystem development in the coming months.
