So when the actor took to social media on July 21 to call Argentina “historically one of, if not the most, racist countries in the world” and urged Black fans in the US to stop supporting the team, the message landed like a sledgehammer on an already fractured discourse.
The comments came in the wake of Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a match that became less about soccer and more about identity, politics, and the kind of racism that has dogged Argentine fan culture for years. And now, that cultural reckoning is bleeding into an unexpected corner of finance: fan tokens.
The incidents that lit the fuse
Videos circulated during the tournament showing Argentine supporters using racial slurs. Other clips captured fans throwing bananas at Black players, a gesture so steeped in racist history that it barely requires explanation. Streamer IShowSpeed, who has tens of millions of followers, was reportedly targeted with abusive comments by Argentine fans during the tournament.
The backlash gained serious traction on social media, where the conversation shifted from “who are you rooting for” to something much heavier. Supporting or opposing Argentina became, for a growing number of Black American voices, less a sporting preference and more a political statement against what they described as entrenched racism and xenophobia within Argentine soccer culture.
FIFA condemned racism and announced it was actively investigating incident reports of fan abuse connected to the Argentine national team during the tournament.
The political backdrop making everything worse
Argentine President Javier Milei’s political ties to controversial figures in US politics added another layer of tension to an already combustible situation. Milei’s alignment with polarizing US political figures was cited by critics as a factor contributing to the intensified backlash.
Many critics pointed out that Messi, arguably the most influential figure in Argentine soccer history, had not publicly addressed the racist incidents involving his country’s supporters.
Where fan tokens enter the picture
Fan tokens associated with the Argentine national team, like ARG, sit at the intersection of sports fandom and speculative trading. When a significant portion of potential buyers, particularly in the massive US market, begins viewing support for the team as morally compromised, that’s not just a PR problem. It’s a demand problem.
These assets are uniquely vulnerable to cultural and political headwinds because their entire value proposition is tied to emotional attachment. A traditional stock might weather a brand controversy because underlying business fundamentals provide a floor. Fan tokens have no such floor.
When Samuel L. Jackson tells millions of followers to distance themselves from a team, and that message resonates across Black American communities with significant purchasing power, the downstream effects on anything financially tied to that team’s brand are real and measurable.
