Huo Xing Finance reports that on October 14, Applied Materials, the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer, officially unveiled the EPIC Semiconductor Research Center in Sunnyvale, California. With an estimated total investment of $5 billion, the project aims to accelerate innovation in advanced chip technologies for the AI era. The EPIC center spans approximately 600,000 square feet and will host research teams from industry leaders including Intel, TSMC, Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, who will collaborate alongside Applied Materials engineers and gain early access to the latest semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Applied Materials states that the center has the potential to reduce the timeline for advancing new chip architectures from concept to commercialization from the typical 10 to 12 years to as little as 6 years. The center is primarily focused on research and development rather than chip mass production, and in the short term, it does not imply an immediate return of U.S. chip manufacturing capacity. However, it is expected to strengthen Silicon Valley’s competitiveness in advanced semiconductors and AI chips. Applied Materials’ shares closed down 2.88% on Tuesday but rose 0.74% in after-hours trading, with its market capitalization rebounding to $8.3 billion.
