Apple announced at WWDC 2026 that it will embed Google DeepMind’s SynthID invisible watermarks into AI-generated and AI-edited images across its ecosystem, starting with iOS 27 later this year.

The move makes Apple the latest major tech company to rally around SynthID as a de facto standard for identifying synthetic media. OpenAI adopted the same technology in May 2026, meaning three of the most influential AI platforms on the planet now share a common watermarking language.

How SynthID actually works

The technology, developed by Google DeepMind, embeds imperceptible signals directly into the pixel data of AI-generated or AI-modified images. The watermark survives common image manipulations like cropping, compression, and resizing, persisting through the kinds of transformations that typically strip away traditional metadata.

By mid-2026, more than 100 billion images and videos have been watermarked using SynthID across various platforms.

Apple plans to layer SynthID alongside C2PA Content Credentials, a metadata-based standard backed by a coalition of media and tech companies. The combination creates a two-tier verification system: invisible pixel-level watermarks that travel with the image no matter what, plus structured metadata that records provenance details when platforms support it.

What Apple is watermarking

The watermarks will apply to several features inside Apple’s Photos app and its redesigned Image Playground. Clean Up, the tool that removes unwanted objects from photos, will tag its outputs. So will Extend, which uses AI to expand the boundaries of an image beyond its original frame, and Spatial Reframing, which adjusts composition for spatial displays.

Image Playground’s photorealistic outputs will also carry SynthID markers.

Apple Vice President John McCormack highlighted the interoperability angle, noting that SynthID provides a shared framework for generating marked content across different companies and platforms.

Apple is also developing a separate feature called Reference Image, designed for future iPhone hardware. This system would use cryptographic signatures to authenticate original photos captured by iPhone cameras and flag any subsequent AI edits.

The bigger picture on AI content trust

Google open-sourced SynthID’s core technology in 2024, a decision that made adoption by competitors technically feasible. OpenAI’s adoption in May was the first major validation of that strategy. Apple’s endorsement is the second.
