Apple has chosen Google’s Gemini to power the next-gen Siri, while Alphabet plans to spend $175B–$185B in 2026 on AI infrastructure. On-chain data shows rising interest in altcoins to watch as major tech moves reshape market dynamics. Alphabet’s stock fell 5% following the spending announcement.

Apple just made a decision that tells you everything about where AI is headed. Rather than building its own large language models from scratch, the company chose Google’s Gemini to power the next generation of Siri.

The deal sent Alphabet’s market cap to $4 trillion in January 2026, briefly making it the world’s second-most valuable company. That celebration didn’t last long.

The spending problem

Alphabet followed up the partnership news by projecting capital expenditures between $175 billion and $185 billion for 2026. That’s nearly double its roughly $91 billion in 2025 spending, all directed at AI compute capacity and cloud infrastructure.

Investors were, to put it mildly, not thrilled. Alphabet’s shares dropped 5% after the spending announcement.

Apple, meanwhile, gets to maintain its carefully cultivated image as a privacy-first company. Siri gets smarter. iPhones get more capable. And Apple doesn’t have to build and maintain massive AI data centers.

Why crypto should be paying attention

The concentration of AI power in the hands of two companies worth a combined $7-plus trillion is exactly the kind of dynamic that fuels the decentralized AI narrative in crypto.

Every Siri query, every AI-generated suggestion, every smart feature on your iPhone will route through Google’s servers, subject to Google’s policies and Google’s infrastructure decisions. That’s a single point of failure for roughly a billion devices.

The broader AI market is projected to reach several trillion dollars in revenue by the early 2030s. Projects building decentralized GPU marketplaces, federated learning networks, and on-chain AI model verification are positioning themselves as alternatives to this kind of centralized dependency.

The competitive landscape gets weird

Microsoft and OpenAI, which have spent years building their own tightly integrated AI stack, now face a unified Apple-Google front. Siri reaches more pockets than any AI assistant on the planet. If Gemini powers it well, Google’s AI becomes the default intelligence layer for a massive portion of the global smartphone market.

The market’s reaction to Alphabet’s spending plans reveals a deeper tension. A 5% drop on a $4 trillion market cap means roughly $200 billion in value evaporated because Wall Street got nervous about the infrastructure bill.

Decentralized alternatives don’t face the same capital expenditure pressure, because they distribute costs across network participants rather than concentrating them on a single balance sheet. That structural advantage hasn’t translated into meaningful market share yet.
