Apple launches new Mac mini and Mac Studio with on-device AI capabilities.

Huo Xing Finance reports that Apple’s new Mac mini and Mac Studio began shipping on Tuesday local time. Apple emphasized to enterprise buyers that purchasing the new devices is more cost-effective than renting cloud computing power. The new devices support on-device AI, enabling local processing of intensive tasks such as coding, eliminating the need for users to purchase tokens from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. Apple’s Chief Hardware Officer, Johny Srouji, stated: “Once you buy the device and place it on your desk, it’s a one-time investment with exceptional value—no token-based payments required, and the machine can be used indefinitely.” At the launch event, Apple demonstrated four Mac Studio units connected in series running a trillion-parameter AI model to identify and fix graphical code vulnerabilities, powered solely by a single wall outlet. The Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Ultra chip offers up to 512GB of unified memory and supports RDMA to form clusters that share a pooled memory across multiple devices; when four units are networked together, distributed AI inference speeds can reach up to three times that of a single machine. Apple stated that all its chips share consistent underlying design principles, allowing on-device AI models to be deployed on high-end Mac Studio devices while also being compatible with entry-level iPhones and iPads. According to IDC analyst Linn Huang, Apple holds approximately 4.6% of the enterprise desktop market share, compared to Windows’ 91.3%. NVIDIA and various PC manufacturers are launching new desktops to directly compete with the new Macs, and these Windows-based machines are expected to be the focal point of Microsoft’s upcoming San Francisco Windows event next month.
