Anthropic announced Sunday that it plans to launch a public benefit fund with 5% of the company's shares. The pledge would amount to $100 billion if Anthropic reaches a $2 trillion valuation in its IPO. The fund is set to grow as Anthropic's valuation rises. Anthropic says the fund will be a wholly owned LLC, allowing large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. Anthropic says the fund's shares will not be used for lobbying or political giving in the U.S. or abroad.
The commitment builds on pledges by Anthropic's co-founders to give away 80% of the co-founders' equity. A program available to early Anthropic hires and used by many staff members matched donations at a 3:1 ratio. Anthropic says roughly half of the company's employees participate in donation-matching.
The new wave of giving is expected to mirror startup culture through flexible capital, ambitious investments and a search for measurable impact. The approach would differ from massive donations earmarked for renaming hospital wings or university graduate programs. Anthropic's fund and charitable giving by a large new group of millionaires and people worth tens of millions could become major sources of new giving.
Anthropic is joining OpenAI, which a nonprofit foundation controls. The foundation holds a 26% equity stake in OpenAI, worth about $130 billion at the company's current valuation. The foundation has the power to appoint OpenAI's board.
Anthropic says much of the company's public-benefit work will continue inside the company. Anthropic says that work includes AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research, and discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions. Anthropic says the new fund is intended to enable other kinds of giving at greater scale. Anthropic cited AI's effects on the labor market as one potential use. Anthropic said the company has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue, but that "bolder approaches may be needed." Anthropic has not specified those approaches or whether the fund would make direct payments to workers affected by AI.
Anthropic's founders and some employees have close ties to effective altruism, a movement ostensibly dedicated to directing resources toward causes where those resources may do the most good. The Trump White House has sharply criticized effective altruism, emphasizing aspects of the movement far from mainstream philanthropy. Those aspects include an acute interest in animal welfare and abstract comparisons of the value of infants' and adults' lives or future and present people's lives.
Former White House official Taylor Budowich highlighted a 2010 blog comment by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Amodei wrote that an adult death is "perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death." Budowich also shared other examples that Budowich described as "insane beliefs of those who make up Anthropic and how they think about prioritizing charitable giving."

Anthropic to Launch $100 Billion Public Benefit Fund with 5% Company Shares. The fund, structured as a wholly owned LLC, will support nonprofit donations and direct aid, with no shares used for lobbying. Altcoins to watch may react to such large-scale corporate philanthropy. Anthropic’s co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their equity, and the firm matches employee donations 3:1. The fund focuses on measurable impact and flexible capital, distinct from traditional philanthropy. Fear and greed index movements could reflect market sentiment toward AI-driven corporate strategies. Anthropic also works on AI safety and offers nonprofit discounts, with future funding possibly addressing AI’s labor market effects.
