Anthropic's public S-1 filing on Monday has divided investors over the company's planned IPO. Anthropic reportedly seeks an IPO valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, compared with a valuation of $965 billion in May. The reported valuation range would immediately place Anthropic among the 10 most valuable U.S. technology companies. The offering could become the largest IPO ever.
Supporters highlight Anthropic's annual sales growth of 1,300%. Supporters also emphasize net revenue retention of 900% and an implied gross margin of 85%. Critics focus on losses, hundreds of billions of dollars in compute commitments and a risk disclosure section exceeding 90 pages. Investors face the challenge of valuing the first pure-play artificial intelligence company to go public amid rising interest rates and mounting concern about AI infrastructure spending.
Anthropic develops Claude AI models and sells services through enterprise agreements and subscriptions. Anthropic's prospectus said more than 11,900 enterprise customers each spent at least $100,000 over the preceding year. The prospectus identified more than 1,900 clients spending at least $1 million each. The prospectus also identified roughly 250 customers spending at least $10 million each. Five customers generated about a quarter of Anthropic's revenue during the first nine months of 2026.
Anthropic recorded a loss of $80.7 billion during the first six months of this year, versus $12.9 billion during the corresponding period in 2025. Changes in the fair value of convertible notes and derivative liabilities accounted for most of the loss. Anthropic's compute commitments are increasing sharply. Lower-cost open-weight models are creating greater competitive pressure.
Janus Henderson Investors portfolio manager Denny Fish said on Monday that AI represents a technology shift that will profoundly shape people's lives, but important details remain unavailable. Redpoint Ventures managing director Erica Brescia said on Monday that Anthropic's early performance was impressive and retail investors could participate in AI's transformation beyond chip stocks. Redpoint Ventures holds an investment in Anthropic.
New Constructs CEO David Trainer described the planned offering as "a huge Wall Street grift." New Constructs argued in a report last month that Anthropic represented the "most ridiculous IPO of 2026" and would test investor gullibility on an unprecedented scale. Trainer said on Tuesday that reviewing the prospectus had not changed Trainer's opposition. Trainer said AI would greatly benefit society but would offer less benefit to businesses. Trainer expressed concern about Anthropic's competitive position, an insider selling timetable Trainer considers opaque, and commitments and liabilities far exceeding cash. Trainer also argued that existing Anthropic investors want an opportunity to sell their holdings.
Elevation Partners co-founder Roger McNamee, an early Google and Facebook investor, said on Tuesday that the IPO poses serious danger to investors. McNamee argued that the industry still needs to prove much and described the S-1 as "speculative fiction" whose extensive disclosures do not clarify the investment story.
Anthropic must still complete several stages before the IPO can proceed. Anthropic's roadshow will seek prospective investors and assess demand. Anthropic must then establish the offer price and distribute shares. Anthropic will subsequently list on Nasdaq using the ticker ANT.
D.A. Davidson managing director Gil Luria said on Tuesday that Anthropic needs to provide more information about long-term profitability and valuation before the debut. Luria said an appropriately priced IPO would probably perform very well. Luria argued that Anthropic remains the leading AI company and that investors will seek direct exposure to a pure-play AI business.
Anthropic's IPO Valuation Sparks Investor Debate

Investor sentiment is split over Anthropic's IPO, with the S-1 filing showing a $1.5T to $2T valuation range. The firm reported 1,300% sales growth and 900% net revenue retention, but also an $80.7B loss in H1 2026. The fear and greed index among investors reflects this divide, as massive losses and compute costs raise concerns. The IPO, if successful, would be the largest in history, listing on Nasdaq as ANT.
