Devices such as microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, and even laser systems within quantum computers can all be connected through a single unified interface. In the past, linking devices from different manufacturers typically required custom interface development, often taking weeks or even months. Anthropic claims MHS can reduce this process to just hours or even minutes. MHS functions as a unified “hardware interface”: once a device is connected via an MHS driver, it communicates in a standardized format what functions it supports, its current state, and which safety constraints cannot be violated. The agent then controls the device through MCP, command line, or API—without needing to rewrite connection code for each machine. MHS is not tied to Claude; other models and agents can also integrate with it. Real-world testing is already underway. Carnegie Mellon University connected an experimental automation system that normally takes weeks to set up in just about eight hours, tripling experimental speed. Quantum computing company QuEra enabled Claude to automatically optimize laser calibration procedures, achieving 695 successful outcomes out of 700 blind tests—a 99.3% success rate. AWS, Hugging Face, Raspberry Pi, and Universal Robots are also integrating MHS. However, MHS is not yet an open standard; it is currently available only by application to select research institutions and manufacturers, with Anthropic planning to open-source it after completing additional safety tests. At this stage, Claude’s understanding of the physical world remains limited: during testing at Genentech, it failed to recognize that bubbling liquid indicated a physical malfunction and required researchers to clarify that it was not a software issue.
